Q: What do you charge for garbage, yard waste and recyclables at the Solid Waste Agency?
A: Click a link for information on disposal fees at agency sites:

  • $35 per ton for garbage with a $5 minimum for cars / van / SUVs and $15 minimum for pick-ups and service vans
  • $15 per ton for yard waste, vegetation and woody debris, including clean drywall and lumber / pallets
  • FREE drop-off center for recyclables at the covered drive-thru center on County Home Road

    Q: What do I need to do with corrugated cardboard?
    A: Recyclable corrugated cardboard is banned from the CR/LC SWA landfill; if cardboard is present tipping fee doubles to $70 per ton.  Cardboard can be recycled at both Agency  locations.
     
    Q: Can I buy compost in bulk from the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency?
    A: BULK compost is FREE for existing residential uses - all other users (new construction) can purchase bulk compost for $8.00 per cubic yard (plus tax).  For more information contact the compost facility at 398-5160.
     
    Q: Does the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency pick up my garbage?
    A: No. For questions about Garbage Pickup, Curbside Recycling, or Yard Waste in Cedar Rapids, you'll want to call the Cedar Rapids Solid Waste Department at 286-5897 or visit their website at www.cedar-rapids.org/solidwaste.     Q: I have a question about getting rid of yard waste. Who do I call?
    A: The Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency does not handle yard waste pick up. In Cedar Rapids call the Solid Waste Department at 286-5897 or visit their website at www.cedar-rapids.org/solidwaste. In Marion, call Public Services at 377-6367. Other communities contact your local hauler.
     
    Q: I am not sure what I can put out for curbside recycling.

    Q: What can I do with empty paint cans?
    A: For Cedar Rapids and Marion: Paint cans must be completely empty or completely dried out. The lid goes into the trash and the empty paint can must be placed curbside next to the trash can. Sticker is not needed. Other communities should check with their local hauler for disposal regulations.
     
    Q: How do I dispose of an old lawn mower?
    A: Once drained of all gas and oil, most lawn care equipment - lawn mower, snow blower can be disposed of for FREE at both Agency locations.
     
    Q: How do I dispose of railroad ties?
    A: Railroad ties can be taken to Compost, 2250 A Street SW near Czech Village in Downtown Cedar Rapids. 
    Q: What can I do with fluorescent bulbs?
    A:

    Fluorescent bulbs and tubes can be recycled at both Agency locations.  Residents can drop-off for FREE.  Businesses pay $1 per bulb.

    Q: How do I dispose of a computer, television, VCR or other electronics I no longer want?
    A:

    Electronics can be recycled at both Agency locations

    Electronics that are recycled for FREE:  Computer CPUs, keyboards, mouse, CDs, DVDs, CD / DVD Player, cameras, iPod / MP3 Player, Laptops, Movie Cameras, Palm Pilots, Print Cartridges, Radios, VCRs, VCR Tapes

    Electronics that are recycled for a FEE:  Computer Monitor $5, Copy Machine (desktop) $3, Copy Machine (floor model) $15, Fax Machine $3, Television (non-console) $5, Television (console $10), Printer (desktop) $3,  Printer (floor model) $15 
    Q: What do I do with an old sink?
    A:

    Metal sinks can be recycled for FREE at both Agency locations.  

    Acrylic and porcelain sinks can be landfilled at the County Home Road location.

    Sinks in good condition should be donated to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 725 North Center Point Road, Hiawatha.  Call 294-1500 for more information.
    Q: How do I dispose of old tires?
    A: Tires are recycled at both Agency locations - FEE based on tire size and whether they are
    $off-rim / $on rim:  Automotive tires $1 / $2; Truck tires $10 / $15; Tractor tires $25.      
     
    Q: How do I dispose of an old appliance (dishwasher, stove, refrigerator, microwave, freezer, washer, dryer, hot water heater, humidifier, etc.)?
    A: Appliances are banned from Iowa landfills.  They are accepted at Agency locations and require a $9.00 per appliance recycling fee.
     
    Q: What can I do with drywall or pallets that I no longer need?
    A:

    Drywall is treated as solid waste at the landfill on County Home Road, landfill tipping fee applies to all drywall brought in for disposal.

    Clean pallets (free of paint) are accepted at Compost for $15 per ton (a savings of $20 per ton over landfilling!)  All other pallets are treated as solid waste and should be landfilled.

     
    Q: How do I dispose of unwanted paint (and other hazardous chemicals)?
    A: LATEX paint can be dried out and put in with regular trash.  ALL other paint along with household hazardous materials can be safely disposed of for FREE at our Pollution Prevention Center with an appointment.  CALL 377-5290 to schedule a convenient drop-off time between 9:00 and 4:30 Tuesday - Saturday.
