Map for Solid Waste Agency on County Home Road

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) - includes durable goods, nondurable goods, containers and packaging, food scraps, yard trimmings, and miscellaneous wastes from residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial sources. MSW does not include construction and demolition sludges, combustion ash, or industrial process wastes.

Hazardous Waste - has one or more of the following properties: corrosivity, reactivity, toxicity, or flammability. Hazardous wastes are generated by households, businesses and industries. Subtitle C regulations regarding the management of hazardous waste depends on the source and the amount of waste generated.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) - composed primarily of materials found in waste generated by consumers in their homes. Household waste, including HHW, is exempt from federal hazardous waste regulations and liability under RCRA, Subtitle C. As such, HHW is not regulated and programs such as Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency Pollution Prevention Center do not need a Subtitle C permit. HHW can also be transported without following hazardous waste transportation regulations. In addition, the storage of any quantity of HHW for any length of time does not trigger any Subtitle C requirements.

Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators - companies that generate less than 100 kilograms of hazardous waste per month. Such companies are exempt from RCRA, Subtitle C hazardous waste regulations, but must ensure that the waste is sent to a permitted recycling and disposal facility.

Small Quantity Generators - (100 to 1,000 kilograms of hazardous waste per month)

Large Quantity Generators - (over 1,000 kilograms of hazardous waste per month) must comply with strict regulations for transport, storage, and disposal. These generators must obtain an identification number which is used in reporting and tracking the history of their hazardous waste.
