Recycling
Recycling is the act of recovering a waste material for refuse and processing into another useful product. Recycling in typically symbolized by three chasing arrows that stand for collection, processing, and procurement or reuse of the recovered materials. All three activities must be completed in order to make recycling programs effective.
Residential recycling collections can be handled in one of two ways - drop-off sites or curbside collections. Where materials are collected via drop-offs, residents are asked to deliver recyclables to a highly-visible centralized location for collection. Curbside recycling collection is similar to solid waste collection in which a collection vehicle drives from house to house collecting materials that residents have placed at the curb. Commercial and industrial recycling collection typically parallels the waste collection system established by each business.
Collected materials are delivered to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for processing to meet cleanliness and separation specifications established by materials brokers or reusers, collectively known as markets.
