Waste Reduction
Waste reduction essentially involves measures to avoid producing waste, decrease the quantity of waste, or decrease the toxicity of waste materials. Most waste reduction measures involve educating waste generators. Waste reduction activities are proactive (i.e., they address waste management issues before the waste is generated and require disposal). Waste reduction activities range from:
- established incentives like volume based disposal fees to change disposal habits
- educating consumers about buying products with little or no packaging or less toxicity (i.e., replacing hazardous cleaners with non-hazardous alternatives)
- encouraging manufacturers to increase the recyclability of products they produce
