Recycle those holiday lights

11/28/2011 12:00pm

No matter how handy you may consider yourself to be, there comes a time when those holiday light sets are just not worth repairing, or untangling, any longer.

But you don't have to throw those strands in the trash any more. The Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency offers a simple recycling program that will transform your old lights into reuseable materials, including the metals, glass and plastic they contain.

Just bring your light strands to either Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency site. Check in at the scale house, and you'll be directed to the electronics recycling area for drop-off.

Any style of lights can be recycled, from C7 and C9 bulbs, to miniature lights, to the new-style LED sets. They don't need to be specially packaged or tied.

The program is free to Linn County residents; businesses should contact Midwest Recycling or more information. Lights can be recycled year-round, if you happen to find a few non-working light sets during spring cleaning.

So remember, don't toss those lights. Recycle them with the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency!
