Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency is a government agency formed in 1994 by a partnership agreement between the City of Cedar Rapids and Linn County. The purpose of this partnership is two-fold:
- to more efficiently manage the garbage generated in Linn County;
- to more efficiently meet state-mandated waste reduction goals.
Consequently, when the Agency was formed, it assumed operation of the solid waste disposal facility operated by the city of Cedar Rapids and the facility operated by Linn County. Those are now considered Site #1 and Site #2. (The Compost Facility, located adjacent to Site #1, is called Site #3.)
Interesting Facts:
- The Iowa Legislature banned the landfilling of yard waste effective January 1, 1991.
- Approximattly 55,000 tons of materials are composted annually at the Agency's state-of-the art compost facility.
- In 1995, the Agency enlarged its compost facility so that it could accept organic materials from local industry. This type of organic recycling helps make excellent compost and annually keeps thousands of tons of material out of local landfills.
- After it is shredded, "cooked," screened, tested, and re-tested, bulk compost and hundreds of thousands of bags of compost from this facility are sold annually to retail outlets as "Big Blue."
