A Better Option for Unwanted Furniture & More!

As Linn County residents dig through their garages, basements, storage sheds, and everywhere else to take back space, the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency wants to remind everyone that there are other options besides the landfill for some unwanted items.

Central Furniture Rescue in Cedar Rapids is continuing to help the community, providing furniture and household items to those transitioning from homelessness to living in their own homes.

In 2020, they helped 422 households get started. Central Furniture Rescue also helped 50 households replace items destroyed during the August 10, 2020 derecho. In doing so, they diverted 138 tons of material from the landfill! This year, they expect to help 600 households.

The Solid Waste Agency is a huge advocate for recycling, but reuse is even better! Organizations such as Central Furniture Rescue are not just helping keep usable items out of the landfill, they are helping people make their lives better. So before taking that old couch, coffee table, or dresser to the landfill, contact Central Furniture Rescue to see if they can use it to make someone’s house into a home.
